MTAA Welcomes Moves to Examine Petrol Pricing
15 Jun 2007
The Motor Trades Association of Australia (MTAA) has long fought to protect small business from anti-competitive behaviour and has vigorously advocated for reforms to the Trade Practices Act 1974. The Association has also been concerned for many years about predatory behaviour and supports the introduction of measures which will address our concerns, and those shared by our members, about such behaviour.
MTAA thus welcomes today’s announcement by the Treasurer of an inquiry into petrol pricing and the contemporaneous announcement by Senator Steve Fielding of Family First, Victoria of draft amendments to the Trades Practices Act 1974. MTAA is supportive of any measures which will strengthen predatory pricing provisions and enable service station operators to compete in a market that is increasingly dominated by grocery/oil company alliances.
MTAA will continue to advocate for strengthened laws to address concerns about anti-competitive behaviour in the marketplace in order to ensure that consumers benefit from the choice that true competition provides.
