Smash Repairers Welcome Government Support for Code of Conduct11 Aug 2004Smash repairers have welcomed today's announcement by the Minister for Small Business, the Hon Joe Hockey MP, that the Federal Government is concerned that problems identified by smash repairers, in relation to their commercial dealings with insurers, are serious and require resolution. Smash repairers particularly welcome the Government's support for the introduction of a voluntary Code of Practice between smash repairers and insurance companies. The Motor Trades Association of Australia (MTAA), representing smash repairers, has long campaigned for the introduction of a national code to cover dealings between repairers and insurance companies and to provide for an effective dispute resolution process. MTAA recognises that the Minister's announcement today is a significant statement of the Government's commitment to find a resolution of the current difficulties between the parties. MTAA and its Members are committed to working with the Government and other stakeholders on the development of a national code and look forward to that code being finalised at the earliest possible opportunity.
